Surrey County Council has carried out a consultation with relevant stakeholders and issued consultation documentation regarding the proposal to re-designate Sunnydown School from September 2016.

The education consultation period closed on WEdnesday 23 March 2016. A public meeting was held at the school on 10 March 2016. Approximately 20 people in total attended the public meeting, including parents and governors.

Of the responses received, 83% agreed with the proposal to re-designate the school and 17% disagreed with the proposal to re-designate the school.

Of the 18 responses that disagreed with the proposal, 14 explained that they were in support of the need for more places at the school but disagreed on the grounds of the traffic and parking concerns.

A small number of concerns were raised about the posibility of the pupil cohort changing and the impact on existing pupils. However there is no proposal to change the cohort of pupils attending the school as the pupils currently attending Sunnydown School fit within the need description of Communication and Interaction Needs (CoIN).

Overview

Surrey County Council and the governing body of Sunnydown School have been working together with to look at providing the best education for boys in Surrey with Communication and Interaction (CoIN) needs.

Currently Sunnydown School is designated as a school for boys with Emotional and Learning Difficulties. We recently reviewed what special support is being provided across the county. The results showed that it would be better for Sunnydown to be redesignated as a school providing support for pupils with CoIN needs.

Our proposal is that Sunnydown School changes its designation from Emotional and Learning Difficulties to Comunication and Interaction Needs. This new designation is a closer match to the needs of the pupils currently attending the school. We expect that more pupils in the future will need the support of a specialist CoIN school, and this change will help meet their needs.

There would be no change to pupils currently attending the school.

We are proposing that this change takes place from 1 September 2016.

Surrey County Council has recently worked with the school to update the dining area and to provide a new teaching block. There would be no need for any further adaptations or additional works.
