We asked

Surrey County Council, in collaboration with Bourne Education Trust, wanted to seek views on the proposal to expand Pyrcroft Grange Primary School from September 2022.

You said

The consultation on the proposed expansion has now closed and responses have been collated and analysed.

  • There were 61 responses in total
  • 50.8% of respondents agreed with the proposal
  • 47.6% of respondents disagreed with the proposal
  • 1.6% of respondents stated that they “didn’t know”

There was a narrow margin of agreement with the proposal, however those who disagreed were predominantly concerned about the negative impact the expansion would have on other schools in the area.

We did

Upon consideration, it has been agreed between the local authority, Pyrcroft Grange Primary School and Bourne Education Trust that it would be prudent at this stage to put the expansion plans on hold. In the meantime, pupil place forecasts do suggest there will be a deficit of places in Chertsey and the surrounding area in September 2022. If required, the local authority will liaise with schools in the area to consider where a temporary bulge class may be best placed to meet this demand.

The local authority is committed to ensuring there is a collegiate approach to school organisation in the area. Additional analysis is required to understand the level of demand coming forward from September 2023, and further consultation and discussions will be made as necessary.

Overview

Surrey County Council, together with the Governing Body of Pyrcroft Grange Primary School and Bourne Education Trust are looking at how best to provide the additional school places needed in the Chertsey area of the Runnymede borough.

Pyrcroft Grange Primary School is a one form of entry (1FE) primary school, accommodating children from Year R to Year 6 for 210 places.

Our proposal is to expand Pyrcroft Grange Primary School by one form of entry to 420 places.  These changes would come into effect from September 2022.

Some works would be undertaken on Pyrcroft Grange Primary School's site to increase the capacity to accommodate the additional pupils.

The expansion would be effective from 1 September 2022. The school will expand incrementally - that is, older year groups would remain unchanged as they move through the school, but each mainstream Reception intake would be 60 pupils from 2022 onwards.

Surrey County Council and the Governing Body of Pyrcroft Grange Primary School and Bourne Education Trust would like to seek your views on this proposal.  The consultation will open on Tuesday 1 December 2020.

A public online meeting is planned on Tuesday 15 December at 7:30pm. Anyone who wishes to may attend, please email: schoolorg@surreycc.gov.uk to register your interest and you will be sent a link to the online event

All are welcome to attend.
