Byfleet Road Cobham, 40mph Speed Limit Proposal

Overview

Thank you for your interest in our 40mph Speed Limit proposals in Byfleet Road, Cobham.

The legislation we must follow before introducing this scheme means that we need to allow objections and comments from the public to be considered before a final decision is reached about whether or not to go ahead with our preferred scheme in its current form.

The proposal:

It is proposed that the existing 50mph speed limit on the A245 Byfleet Road, Cobham/ Weybridge between the current national speed limit (60mph) at Jct. B365 Seven Hills Road and current 30mph speed limit, approximately 385m east Jct. B375 Brooklands Road is reduced to a 40mph speed limit. This is a length of approximately 1,617m. The proposed speed limit reduction is to encourage lower vehicle speeds and reduce the severity of any collisions by lowering the speed limit from 50mph to 40mph.

The scheme has been promoted by Elmbridge Road Safety Working Group, which comprises of Surrey County Council Road Safety and Traffic Engineers along with Surrey Police Road Safety Traffic Management and Casualty Reduction Officers, who expressed concern that vehicle speeds were contributing failure to shunt, turning manoeuvre and loss of control conflicts along the length.

Speed surveys have been conducted at two locations. Mean vehicle speeds at both locations comply with the current speed limit policy, Surrey County Council’s Policy Setting Local Speed Limits. Surrey Police support the speed limit reduction from 50mph to 40mph along this length of Byfleet Road.

Delegated approval to proceed with these proposals and the associated Speed Limit Order has been received from the Highways Engagement & Commissioning Manager in September 2022.
