Overview

Thank you for your interest in our 20mph Speed Limit proposals in Camberley.

The legislation we must follow before introducing this scheme means that we need to allow objections and comments from the public to be considered before a final decision is reached about whether or not to go ahead with our preferred scheme in its current form.

The proposal:

Residents have raised concerns about vehicle speeds and road safety in Gibbet Lane on several occasions.  The safety of children using the route to walk or cycle to and from school has been highlighted as a particular issue, and the introduction of a 20mph speed limit has been requested.

Our speed limit policy requires existing average vehicle speeds to be at or below 24mph for a 20mph scheme to be introduced with signing only.  Where average speeds are above 24mph the introduction of traffic calming measures is required to help reduce vehicle speeds if a 20mph scheme is to be introduced.

Speed surveys carried out in Gibbet Lane indicate it would be necessary to install traffic calming measures to enable a 20mph speed limit to be introduced.  As a result, the Surrey Heath Local Committee has agreed that a proposal to introduce a 20mph speed limit and traffic calming in Gibbet Lane should be progressed as part of the 2022/23 Surrey Heath programme of works.

The scheme detailed in the attached plan, which proposes the introduction of 4 road tables and a 20mph speed limit, has therefore been developed.  These measures will help to reduce vehicle speeds and improve road safety (especially for pedestrians and cyclists, including children on route to and from local schools).

A copy of the public notice advertising our intention to introduce the traffic calming measures and 20mph speed limit is included for your information.  We would welcome any comments you have about the proposal and would ask you to use the consultation webpage address contained in the notice to make any representation.

If you would like to object, support, or comment on the proposal, please use the Online Survey linked at the bottom of the page, or alternatively, write to:
