Canalside and Holmesdale Avenue 20mph speed limit proposals

Closed 24 Nov 2022

Overview

Thank you for your interest in our 20mph speed limit proposals in Canalside and Holmesdale Avenue, Redhill.

The legislation we must follow before introducing this scheme means that we need to allow objections and comments from the public to be considered before a final decision is reached about whether or not to go ahead with our preferred scheme in its current form.

The proposal:

It is proposed to reduce the existing speed limit of 30mph to a 20mph speed limit on the D1262 Holmesdale Avenue from the junction with C67 Nutfield Road to the junction with the D1262 Canalside. It is also proposed to reduce the existing speed limit of 30mph to a 20mph speed limit on the D1262 Canalside, from the railway bridge, 60m west of the junction with X9068 Thornton Side for a distance of 292m to its junction with X9065 Canalside.

Local residents have raised concerns about the speed of traffic on Canalside and Holmesdale Avenue in the Redhill East division with their divisional member.  Speed limit assessments have been carried out on Canalside and Holmesdale Avenue following the processes set out in Surrey County Council’s Policy “Setting Local Speed Limits”.    A reduction of the speed limit on the D1262 Canalside, from the railway bridge (60m west of the junction with X9068 Thornton Side) for a distance of 292m to its junction with X9065 Canalside complies with the policy for a 20mph speed limit and is supported by the police. A reduction in the speed limit on the D1262 Holmesdale Avenue from its junction with C67 Nutfield Road to its junction with the D1262 Canalside also complies with the policy for a 20mph speed limit and is supported by the police.

Reigate and Banstead Local Committee agreed at their meeting on 28 February 2022, that based upon the evidence provided by the results of the speed limit assessments, the existing 30mph speed limit on D1262 Holmesdale Avenue and on the public section of D1262 Canalside be reduced to 20mph.

Unfortunately all other roads off of Holmesdale Avenue and Canalside are private, therefore Surrey County Council is legally unable to install a speed limit on these roads.
