London Road, Guildford - Proposed Provision of a Pedex Crossing
Overview
Thank you for your interest in our pedex crossing proposals on London Road, Guildford.
The legislation we must follow before introducing this scheme means that we need to allow objections and comments from the public to be considered before a final decision is reached about whether or not to go ahead with our preferred scheme in its current form.
The proposal:
A3100 London Road has a posted speed limit of 40mph and a wide carriageway at the location of the proposed pedex crossing. On this stretch of road, at peak times of the day pedestrians would have difficulty asserting precedence and vulnerable road users are likely to need a dedicated facility to feel secure enough to cross, this is especially so as there is no other obvious crossing point for pedestrians other than the uncontrolled crossing points at the Weybrook Drive and Clay Lane roundabouts.
The new pedex crossing is intended to improve local accessibility by providing a facility that enables pedestrians to be able to safely and easily cross a wide and busy road where it is currently difficult to do so. This includes school children walking from the estate on the east side of the A3100 London Road to Burpham Primary School on the west side of the road. Furthermore, in combination with associated improvements in the area, the proposed crossing will make it more appealing to undertake local journeys via walking rather than by private car thus contributing positively towards modal shift and supporting ambitions to encourage sustainable travel in Guildford.
A new pedex crossing was included in the proposals for the Active Travel Guildford to Burpham cycle scheme which was consulted on from September to December 2023. Following the consultation, the Leader of Surrey County Council decided to defer a decision on the scheme subject to further technical review informed by comments received through the engagement. The Leader also decided that in the interim, the delivery of a controlled crossing near Winterhill Way should be progressed to assist with safer routes to school, following strong representation from local stakeholders.
