Taleworth Road, Ashtead - proposed 20mph speed limit

Closed 10 Nov 2022

Overview

Thank you for your interest in our 20mph Speed Limit proposals in Taleworth Road, Ashtead.

The legislation we must follow before introducing this scheme means that we need to allow objections and comments from the public to be considered before a final decision is reached about whether or not to go ahead with our preferred scheme in its current form.

Surrey County Council is proposing to reduce the existing speed limit on Taleworth Road from 30mph to 20mph. Research has shown that reduced vehicle speeds reduce the risk of collision and reduce the consequences and severity of any injuries. A reduced speed limit would therefore help to improve road safety in Taleworth Road including outside West Ashtead Primary School.

Surrey County Council has a speed limit policy in place to set speed limits that are successful in managing vehicle speeds and are appropriate for the main use of the road. As part of the policy speed surveys are carried out to assess whether reducing the speed limit using signs alone would be effective, or whether a lower limit would need to be supported by traffic calming measures.

Results of speed surveys carried out in February 2022 showed that existing average speeds on Taleworth Road comply with Surrey County Council’s policy for a 20mph speed using signs alone. As a result, new 20mph signs are proposed to be installed at the entrance to Taleworth Road, to support the proposed 20mph speed limit, with additional smaller 20mph signs in Taleworth Road, as shown on the attached plan.
