Proposal

Surrey County Council have been working with County Councillor Buddhi Weerasinghe to develop proposals for safety measures on The Avenue, Lower Sunbury.

The Avenue - Consultation Plan (PDF)

Following comments received on proposals presented by your local councillor Buddhi Weerasinghe earlier this year, the scheme has been revised to focus on pedestrian safety improvements at the junction with Manor Lane. The proposal to include the entire length of The Avenue in the Thames Street 20mph Zone was rejected.

The scheme aims to promote a safer environment and to reduce conflict between vehicles and pedestrians. It is anticipated that particular benefits would be for child and adult pedestrians walking and cycling to and from the local schools.

It is proposed to:

  • Install a zebra crossing south of the raised table on the junction with Manor Lane.
  • Create a ‘pinch-point’ on the carriageway at a point north of the raised table on the junction with Manor Lane.
  • Install 2 sets of two road cushions on the south approach to the zebra crossing.
  • Install 2 sets of two road cushions on the north approach to the pinch point.

In addition, the current 20mph Zone will be extended 75m to the junction with Saxonbury Avenue on The Avenue. This will benefit both pedestrians and motorists using/accessing the busy parade of businesses.

Background

In 2020, a young pupil from Chennestone Primary School presented a petition to the Joint Committee for Spelthorne requesting a zebra crossing on The Avenue, as she felt unsafe crossing The Avenue.   The Joint Committee for Spelthorne, agreed to allocate funding from the 2021-22 annual Highways budget to install highway improvement measures.

It is anticipated that the scheme will be constructed early 2023.
