The Square, Shere - Experimental Prohibition of Motor Vehicles Proposal
Overview
Thank you for your interest in our prohibition of motor vehicles proposals in The Square,Shere.
The legislation we must follow before introducing this scheme means that we need to allow objections and comments from the public to be considered before a final decision is reached about whether or not to go ahead with our preferred scheme in its current form.
The proposal:
Experimental prohibition of motor vehicles to create a pedestrianised area and to introduce a seating area for the local residents to use.
This an experimental pedestrianisation scheme in Shere under the Experimental Traffic Regulation (ETRO) process. The scheme will create a small public space for all to access. The scheme will improve child and pedestrian safety, and will include improvements to the public realm and create a more welcoming space for residents and visitors to rest, interact and enjoy Shere Village.
This results in reports of anti-social behaviour and dangerous driving. By eliminating the majority of traffic, in an eastbound direction, the congestion will likely be dramatically reduced without the need for additional parking restrictions, maintaining the parking for residents.
Making an experimental TRO is considered to have material benefits for the new, prohibition of motor vehicles in The Square, as it is a more flexible approach, which allows for feedback and modifications if so required.
The Council will consider in due course whether the provisions of each Experimental Traffic Order should be reproduced and continued in force indefinitely by means of an Order under Section 1 of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984
