Trodds Lane, Guildford - 30mph and 40mph Speed Limit Proposal

Overview

Thank you for your interest in our 30mph and 40mph Speed Limit Proposal in Trodds Lane, Guildford.

The legislation we must follow before introducing this scheme means that we need to allow objections and comments from the public to be considered before a final decision is reached about whether or not to go ahead with our preferred scheme in its current form.

The proposal:

During the last financial year there have been a number of additional new requests for the reduction of speed limits in certain roads in Guildford, one of which was the extension of the existing 40mph speed limit on a section of Trodds Lane. At the March 2022 Guildford Joint Committee meeting, members agreed to include this and several other road safety schemes in the 2022/23 programme.

Speed limits can help to reduce accidents and improve safety for all road users. It has been shown that the slower a vehicle is travelling then the less likelihood there is of a serious or fatal injury occurring.

Following a request from the Guildford East County Councillor and residents, to extend the existing 40mph speed limit on a section of Trodds Lane, engineers from Surrey County Council undertook a speed limit assessment and discussed the proposal with the Police.

It is expected that by extending the existing 40mph speed limit in Trodds Lane, this will contribute to improvements in road safety and the environment in the vicinity. In particular, this will benefit pedestrians using Rights of Way routes 582 and 58, and golfers from Guildford Golf Club, who all cross Trodds Lane in this area.

The above proposal will be advertised in the local press (The Surrey Advertiser). The County Councillor, stakeholders and the police will be formally consulted.

Drafting Amendment

There is an existing 30mph speed limit in Trodds Lane, from its junction with D4009 Epsom Road to a point in line with street lighting column N15, located outside No. 35 Trodds Lane. This speed limit is imposed by the presence of a system of street lighting (i.e., consisting of a minimum of three lamps placed not more than 200 yards apart and lighting the carriageway of the affected road).

At some point in the past the position of the 30mph terminal sign has moved to a position south-east of street lighting column N15. It is thought that this occurred when the village gateway signs were moved. This has resulted in a gap of 90 metres where the 30mph speed limit is not enforceable. It is therefore proposed to extend the existing 30mph speed limit to close this gap and ensure consistency along this length of Trodds Lane and enable the enforcement of the 30mph speed limit along that 90-metre section of Trodds Lane.
