Adult Learning and Skills Inquiry

Closed 18 Apr 2022

Opened 9 Mar 2022

Overview

A group of Surrey county councillors would like to hear from residents, employers and third sector organisations in relation to adult learning and skills.

The councillors, who are members of the Council's Children, Families, Lifelong Learning and Culture Select Committee, are inquiring into adult learning and skills in Surrey in order to identify how it can be improved to better support the economic and social needs of the community and help us to deliver our climate commitments. At the end of the inquiry, the group will publish a report containing their findings.

The group would like residents, employers and third sector organisations to use this consultation to share their views regarding:

  • The benefits of participating in adult learning and skills
  • The current and anticipated economic and social needs of Surrey’s residents and communities (in the context of adult learning and skills)
  • The skills required of the workforce to deliver relevant environmental commitments
  • The groups who currently participate in adult learning and skills and the groups who stand to benefit the most from participating in adult learning and skills
  • The barriers to participating in adult learning and skills
  • Current policy and provision in Surrey, including that of Surrey Adult Learning (Surrey County Council), employers and the private and third sectors
  • Good practice regarding adult learning and skills.

Responses will be reviewed by the Task Group and, where respondents consent, may be published in part or in full in the Task Group's report. Respondents may also be invited to discuss adult learning and skills with the Task Group.

The privacy notice for this consultation is available here: https://www.surreycc.gov.uk/council-and-democracy/your-privacy/our-privacy-notices/select-committee-task-group-privacy-notice

Why your views matter

The coronavirus pandemic has significantly impacted workers and household finances, particularly for those who were already struggling. Meanwhile, employers are experiencing record vacancies but are struggling to find appropriately qualified candidates to fill them.

By sharing your views, you will help us to independently evaluate adult learning and skills in Surrey to identify how the offer can be improved to better meet the needs of residents and business now and in the future, including by supporting the delivery of our climate commitments.

- Chris Townsend, Chairman of the Adult Learning and Skills Task Group
