Church Street, Epsom - Traffic Calming Measures

Closed 4 Aug 2023

Opened 10 Jul 2023

Overview

Thank you for your interest in our Traffic Calming proposals in Church Street, Epsom.

The legislation we must follow before introducing this scheme means that we need to allow objections and comments from the public to be considered before a final decision is reached about whether or not to go ahead with our preferred scheme in its current form.

The proposal:

Due to multiple reports of motorists failing to stop for pedestrians on 2 of the 3 zebra crossings on Church Road, Epsom, the Epsom Local Committee agreed to works to improve and upgrade the zebra crossing points.

The scheme aims to improve pedestrian safety by improving visibility of the zebra crossing points, as well as reducing the speeds of vehicles. This is anticipated to reduce both the frequency of motorists not stopping for pedestrians as well as mitigate the relatively high frequency of casualties recorded at these locations.

Church Street, Epsom- Consultation Plan

It is proposed to:

  • Raise 2 existing zebra crossings (nearest Depot Road and Pitt Road) onto raised tables, making them ‘humped crossings.
  • Upgrade the existing beacons and signs.

Background:

After several reported incidents of motorists not stopping for pedestrians, and a relatively high frequency of casualties at these specific zebra crossings, the Epsom Local Committee decided to fund a feasibility study to find ways to address the issues being reported. This scheme is the culmination of that study.
