Church Lane, Witley 20mph speed limit proposal

Overview

Thank you for your interest in our 20mph speed limit proposals in Church Lane, Witley. 

The legislation we must follow before introducing this scheme means that we need to allow objections and comments from the public to be considered before a final decision is reached about whether or not to go ahead with our preferred scheme in its current form.

The proposal:

The County Council are promoting the above draft Order on safety and environmental grounds.

Consequently it is proposed to impose a 20 mph speed limit on the following roads:

Church Lane (D151) - Between A283 Petworth Road (at the junction with) to the existing speed limit terminals just north of Churchfields (approx. 207m).

The imposition of lower speed limits can lead to a reduction in the number of road injury accidents if the speed limit is effective.  Research published by the Department of the Environment, Transport and Regions (DETR) in ‘New Directions in Speed Management’ indicates that broadly each 1mph reduction in average speed can reduce accident frequency by up to 5%. The severity of injuries caused by accidents also increases with higher collision speeds.
