Overview

Thank you for your interest in our 30mph and 20mph speed limit proposals for Various Roads in the Ranmore Common Area.

The legislation we must follow before introducing this scheme means that we need to allow objections and comments from the public to be considered before a final decision is reached about whether or not to go ahead with our preferred scheme in its current form.

The proposal:

It is proposed to reduce the existing derestricted speed limit in Chapel Lane, Critten Lane, Dorking Road, Hogden Lane, Ranmore Common Road and White Down Lane in order to reduce both traffic speeds and reduce the number of collisions.

The member for the Dorking Hills Electoral Division of Surrey County Council has raised concerns about the existing 60mph/derestricted speed limit on Chapel Lane, Bookham and has requested that the speed limit is reduced. Chapel Lane, Bookham is partly in the Dorking Hills Electoral Division and partly in the Bookham & Fetcham West Electoral Division.

Following consultation with the member for the Bookham & Fetcham West Electoral Division, a speed survey was carried out in Chapel Lane, Bookham. The results of the speed survey complied with our policy “Setting Local Speed Limits” for a signs alone speed limit reduction to 30mph. The Police do not object to the proposal to reduce the speed limit on Chapel Lane, Bookham to 30mph.

Guidance from the Department for Transport emphasises that research into signed alone reductions in speed limits does lead to small reductions in traffic speeds. Therefore, signed alone speed limit reductions are most appropriate where measured traffic speeds are close to the proposed speed limits. The measured speeds on these roads are close to the proposed speed limit of 30mph. Research has shown that if average speeds fall by 1mph then the collision rate will fall by approximately 5%.

If you would like to object, support, or comment on the proposal, please use the Online Survey linked at the bottom of the page, or alternatively, write to:
