Summers Road Safety and Active Travel Proposals
Overview
Thank you for your interest in our proposals along Summers Road in Farncombe.
These proposals form part of the Guildford to Godalming Greenway scheme. The scheme aims to deliver safer and more attractive walking, wheeling and cycling (active travel) infrastructure in the area.
Following an application to Active Travel England, Surrey County Council has secured funding to deliver a first phase of the Guildford to Godalming Greenway scheme. This includes these proposals along Summers Road. Further information about the Guildford to Godalming Greenway and the full phase 1 scope is available to view at: Guildford to Godalming Greenway - improvements to active travel infrastructure - Surrey County Council
The Proposals
The design proposals along Summers Road include the features listed below and shown in the plan also linked to below.
- A 20mph speed limit is proposed along Summers Road between New Pond Road and Bourne Road. This would also apply to the side roads off Summers Road including Brookfield, Rush Croft and Rowbury. 20mph speed limits can improve road safety and make walking, wheeling and cycling safer, easier and more pleasant, which is particularly important on roads where there are schools such as Summers Road. For further information about the benefits of 20mph schemes please see: The benefits of 20mph schemes - Surrey County Council
- Raised tables are proposed to replace the existing road cushions as well as in 6 new locations along the northern section of Summers Road and at 6 side road junctions. At these side road junctions it is also proposed to narrow the junction bell mouth. These interventions are proposed to support the proposed 20mph speed limit and provide safer and more comfortable conditions for walking, wheeling and cycling.
- A new zebra crossing is proposed on Summers Road opposite the footbridge over the railway. This is proposed to provide a safer crossing location for pedestrians travelling to/from Broadwater School, Godalming Leisure Centre, Broadwater Park and the footbridge over the railway. Two of the proposed raised tables would also serve as uncontrolled crossing points.
- In the green area near the proposed zebra crossing it is also proposed to plant new trees and install benches. These would not be located close to properties.
