Vicarage Road, Egham - Toucan Crossing

Closed 11 Nov 2022

Opened 14 Oct 2022

Overview

Thank you for your interest in our Toucan Pedestrian/Cycle Crossing proposals in Vicarage Road, Egham.

The legislation we must follow before introducing this scheme means that we need to allow objections and comments from the public to be considered before a final decision is reached about whether or not to go ahead with our preferred scheme in its current form.

The proposal:

There is an existing island in the middle of Vicarage Road near the Egham Orbit sports centre which helps pedestrians cross at the location.  This crossing point provides a link between the shared pedestrian/cycle paths on either side of the road and to the pedestrian/cycle route which runs through the sport centre site, under the M25 motorway, and through to Quincy Road.  This route can be used by pedestrians and cyclists travelling to Egham Town Centre and Egham Railway Station.  It is also used by parents and children going to and from Manorcroft Primary and Nursery Schools.

Concerns have previously been raised about safety when crossing at the pedestrian island and requests for a controlled crossing have been received.  Vicarage Road has also been identified as a priority cycle route in the Runnymede Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan, and the plan recommends the introduction of a Toucan crossing at the location.  (A Toucan crossing is a signal-controlled crossing that can be used by both cyclists and pedestrians at the same time).

As a result, the Runnymede Joint Committee has agreed a Toucan crossing should be introduced as part of the 2022/23 Runnymede programme of works.  The proposed location of the crossing is shown on the attached plan.  The existing pedestrian island will be removed as part of the works and the new Toucan crossing will allow pedestrians and cyclists to cross the full width of the road in one movement.
