A total of 10 responses were received during the consultation. There were 4 responses from parents, potential parents or families of children with a hearing impairment, 5 from other responders and 1 from a member of staff at the school. Of the 10 responses, 3 agreed with the proposal to close the specialist centre, 2 disagreed with the proposal to close the specialist centre and 5 did not know or offer a position. A number of comments raised concern about suitable alternatives for children with Hearing Impairments and the impact of the closure on parental preference. Concern was also expressed about access to specialist services being cut. The redeployment of funding was raised and some responders wanted to understand what alternatives would be available.

Following the consultation period from 26 January to 10 March 2015, a formal proposal to close the specialist hearing impaired unit at Bishop David Brown School was made to Surrey County Council’s Cabinet Member for Schools and Learning on 9 April 2015. The Cabinet Member has agreed that the centre will close from 31 August 2015. Further information detailing the decision can be found at:

Overview

Surrey County Council, in partnership with Bishop David Brown School, is proposing to close the specialist Hearing Impaired Centre at the school with effect from the 31st August 2015.

Demand for specialist Hearing Impaired places in this area of Surrey has decreased and the number of pupils placed at the Centre has been declining over the past 3-4 years.   An analysis of younger aged pupils with Hearing Impairment indicates no future demand for places at the Centre in the foreseeable future.
