Overview

Thank you for your interest in our 50mph Speed Limit proposals in A31 Farnham By-Pass Area.

The legislation we must follow before introducing this scheme means that we need to allow objections and comments from the public to be considered before a final decision is reached about whether or not to go ahead with our preferred scheme in its current form.

The proposal:

It is proposed to reduce the existing derestricted speed limit along the length of A31 Farnham by-pass and A31 Alton Road to a 50mph speed limit.

The proposed reduced 50mph speed limit is on both the A31 Farnham By-Pass and the A31 Alton Road.  It extends from a point on the Farnham By-Pass at the existing 40mph/derestricted terminal signs approximately 220m west of Weydon Lane to a point on the A31 Alton Road at the existing 60mph/derestricted terminal signs at the County boundary with Hampshire, approximately 480m south-west of Chamber Lane.  The reduced speed limit would apply to both east and westbound A31 carriageways.

The existing 30mph / derestricted speed limit terminal locations within A325 West Street, approximately 45 metres north of Coxbridge roundabout and A325 Wrecclesham Road, approximately 35 metres south of Coxbridge roundabout would remain, with 50mph terminal signs replacing the existing derestricted signs.

Surrey County Council engineers raised concerns about various collisions, vehicle speeds and safety concerns within the derestricted sections of A31 Farnham by-pass and A31 Alton Road. A speed limit assessment has been carried out on the A31 either side of Coxbridge roundabout, following the processes set out in Surrey County Council’s Policy Setting Local Speed Limits. A reduction of the speed limit on A31 Farnham by-pass and A31 Alton Road complies with the policy and is supported by Surrey Police and local Members to be reduced to 50mph.
