Proposed Farnham Town Centre Improvement Scheme - Proposed Provision of Pedex Pedestrian Crossings in Farnham

Closes 20 Sep 2024

Opened 22 Aug 2024

Overview

Thank you for your interest in our pedestrian crossing proposals in Farnham.

The legislation we must follow before introducing this scheme means that we need to allow objections and comments from the public to be considered before a final decision is reached about whether or not to go ahead with our preferred scheme in its current form.

The proposal:

Farnham town centre is currently dominated by roads and traffic and has poor air quality, which negatively impacts the ability to travel easily, safely, and enjoyably around the town on foot and by bus or cycle, resulting in a less pleasant environment and a diminished sense of place. The Farnham Town Centre Improvement Scheme aims to address this by providing wider and repaved pavements, with the removal of unnecessary street clutter, creating loading bays to facilitate deliveries to businesses without blocking traffic lanes, and providing space for new planting, cycle parking and public seating to encourage people to visit and spend more time in the town centre. The scheme also aims to improve safety for users of the town centre including new and improved pedestrian crossings and advanced stop lines for cyclists.

To provide safer pedestrian crossings in the town centre, six new controlled signalised pedestrian crossings (Pedex crossings) are proposed. This includes a new traffic signalised junction with a new three-arm controlled signalised pedestrian crossing at the junction of Downing Street with West Street and The Borough, a new traffic signalised junction with a new two-arm controlled signalised pedestrian crossing at the junction of Downing Street with Longbridge and Union Road and a new diagonal controlled signalised pedestrian crossing at Royal Deer junction.
