Frensham Road Lower Bourne - Pedex Crossing

Overview

Thank you for your interest in our pedex crossing proposals on Fresham Road, Lower Bourne.

The legislation we must follow before introducing this scheme means that we need to allow objections and comments from the public to be considered before a final decision is reached about whether or not to go ahead with our preferred scheme in its current form.

The proposal:

There is an existing zebra crossing 10m north of the junctions with Burnt Hill Road and Lodge Hill Road. There is also a parade of shops including a convenience store and a pharmacy, so the area is often busy with parked vehicles and pedestrians using the shops. The crossing is used by pedestrians, including small school children who walk to South Farnham Infants School situated in School Lane.

The main issues that have been identified are pedestrians often fail to use zebra crossings correctly which can lead to conflict with vehicles. Pedestrians have a tendency to just step onto a zebra crossing and expect approaching vehicles to stop rather than waiting for the vehicles to stop before attempting to cross. A signal controlled crossing would eliminate this behaviour and reduce the risk of collision
