Littleworth Road and Oaken Lane, Claygate - Speed Limits

Closed 9 Dec 2022

Overview

Thank you for your interest in our Speed Limits proposals in Littleworth Road and Oaken Lane, Claygate.

The legislation we must follow before introducing this scheme means that we need to allow objections and comments from the public to be considered before a final decision is reached about whether or not to go ahead with our preferred scheme in its current form.

The proposal:

It is proposed that the existing national speed limit (60mph) on the D6835 Littleworth Road, Esher between the current 40mph speed limit near A309 Kingston By-Pass and Jct. D6835 Littleworth Road, Esher / D6827 Oaken Lane, Claygate will be reduced to 40mph. This is a length of approximately 875m.

It is proposed that the existing national speed limit (60mph) on the D6385 Littleworth Road, Esher between Jct. D6835 Littleworth Road, Esher / D6827 Oaken Lane, Claygate and the existing 30mph speed limit in D6835 Littleworth Road, approximately 55m from Jct. Littleworth Lane will be reduced to 30mph. This is a length of approximately 180m.

It is proposed that the existing national speed limit (60mph) on the D6827 Oaken Lane, Claygate between the Jct. D6835 Littleworth Road, Esher and Jct. D6821 Manor Road South will be reduced to 30mph. This is a length of approximately 415m.

Elmbridge Road Safety Working Group, which comprises of Surrey County Council Road Safety and Traffic Engineers along with Surrey Police Road Safety Traffic Management and Casualty Reduction Officers expressed concern that vehicle speeds were contributing failure to give way conflicts at the Littleworth Road and Oaken Lane priority junction and loss of control conflicts in Oaken Lane on the bridge over the railway and its approaches.

Speed surveys were conducted at three locations, one in each section of Littleworth Lane and one in Oaken Lane in June 2022. Mean vehicle speeds at all three locations comply with the current speed limit policy, Surrey County Council’s Policy Setting Local Speed Limits. Surrey Police support the speed limit reduction from national speed limit (60mph) to 40mph to 30mph in Littleworth Lane (as described) and from national speed limit (60mph) to 30mph in Oaken Lane.

If you would like to object, support, or comment on the proposal, please use the Online Survey linked at the bottom of the page, or alternatively, write to:
